How to Wear A Wig Without Glue

Are you new to wearing wigs and extremely nervous about having to glue down a wig? Are you losing your edges from using adhesive glue or gel to install your wig? Here is an important message for you. You should know you're not just stuck with glue when it comes to wig installation. There are many alternatives and techniques to wear your wig. If you are having all these issues and struggles, this blog is here to help you out.

Why to put on a wig without glue?

It’s undeniable that using adhesive glue is the most effective way to secure your wigs in place. However, long-term use of adhesive materials is harmful to your edges. Wig glue will block the pores in your scalp which then leads to damaging your hair follicles. This damage then prevents your hair from growing along your hairline and even causes hair thinning. Excessive tension or adhesive glue will damage your edges and causes hair loss issues. To pursue a natural looking and protect your edges at the same time, it’s necessary to find other ways to wear your wigs securely without using glue.

Methods to apply a wig without glue

Method One: Wig Grip

Using the wig grip is a way to wear your wig and not having to deal with glue or gel. For those who are unfamiliar with wig grips, it is a velcro band that keeps your wig from sliding and essentially holds your wig in place. It is made with a comfortable, stretchy, double-sided material with a closure in the back to fit most head sizes comfortably. Using a wig grip is a great, easy way to make sure that your wig stays in place without any discomfort. It’s an ideal solution for anyone seeking the ultimate in comfort and security without use of glues.

Wig grip offers various colors, so be sure to purchase the one closest to your skin. It’s an inexpensive way to achieve comfortable wig installation without glue. In order to keep the elasticity of the wig grip, do not wear it for a long time. You’d better prepare several wig grips and take turns to use. In addition, wig grip cleaning is also necessary. After wearing several times, wash the wig grip in cold water with a mild detergent. Then use a dry towel to absorb excess water of the wig grip and let flat to air dry.

Step 1: Pull your hair back into a ponytail or braid your hair at the nape of your neck. If your hair is thick or long, it might be best to put it in cornrows. Then secure the length of the ponytail or braid against your head using a few bobby pins.

Step 2: Get your hair a flat and smoothed down as possible. Then put your wig cap on. However, it is not mandatory. If the lace on your frontal does not match your skin, you could wear a wig cap that matches your skin complexion to create a more natural looking part.

Step 3: Position the wig grip around your hairline, fastening the velcro in the back. Secure the wig grip comfortably in place, and don't make it too tight.

Step 4: Put on your lace front wig, making sure to cover the wig grip. Once the wig is attached to the wig grip, it will be hard to move later. Adjust your wig by gently pulling the hair into the position you desire.

Step 5: Focus on your hairline and pulling out some baby hairs to create a more natural look and feel. Once you have secured your hair in place, rest assured that your wig will not move around.

Method Two: Wig Clips

Wig clips look like small combs, but they have snaps or fasteners on them. They are typically sewn in along the lining of your lace wigs. These clips alone can secure your wig well enough. If properly done, you can easily take your wig off whenever you want. It’s very convenient for those who prefer to take off their wigs every night before going to bed. However, the downside of wig clips is that you cannot wear the wig in a high ponytail because it will lift around the edges.

Even though your wig isn't going anywhere, sometimes you want a bit of added security. Sewing wig clips into your wig is the perfect way to be sure the wig won't move at all! These clips only work if you have some hair of your own to clip them into. Even if you've never sewn before, I bet you can do it! All you need is a needle, thread and some wig clips.

Step 1: Flip your lace wig inside out and decide where to put the wig clips. If you need more added security in the front, you can put it either on the sides or just one in the middle. If it’s riding up in the back, you can put one in the middle or on the sides. If you fell like you are pulling it down from the temples, you can put the clips right on the temples.

Step 2: Use wig clips and thread that matches the color of your wig cap. Put the clip in the position you want. Make sure the teeth of wig clips face into the center of the wig and the rubber part of wig clips are facing down.

Step 3: Put the thread through the eye of the needle. Take the top of two ends of the thread and make a little knot.

Step 4: Insert your needle underneath the lace wig and then up through the hole on the clips. Pull the thread all the way through. Go a second time through the exact same hole.

Step 5: Repeat the procedure until you have sewn through every hole on each wig clip. Now you know how to sew and you can make your wigs extra secure.

Method Three: Elastic Band

Another good alternative is to use elastic band at the nape of the wig. The adjustable straps allow the wig to fit tightly and snugly on your head without being uncomfortable. If you don't know your exact head size, a wig with adjustable straps or bands can be ideal for you as well. This method helps your wig lay flat. If you purchase a wig that's a little too big, this is the method for you to prevent wig from falling off. You can purchase an elastic band from your local craft store. Just an elastic band in just a few steps enables you to wear your wig without glue.

Step 1: Put the band behind your head to measure the band. Make sure you are not putting pressure on your ear. Make sure there is space between your ears and the elastic band. Because if there is too much pressure on the back of your years, your wig will be very uncomfortable. Make sure do not stretch the band to its complete potential. If you do this, your wig will be extremely tight.

Step 2: Mark where you are holding the band and cut off the excess. Put your wig on to check the band one more time to make sure it’s perfect and snug.

Step 3: Put the elastic band on the right position and sew it to the lace. Don’t put it too far on the edge or else it will pull the lace back and expose all your edges. Instead , put it right in the middle and kind of curve it a little bit like a 45 degree angle.

Step 4: Stretch the elastic band and hold the middle to sew it to the wig lace to prevent the band free-floating in the back. It’s an optional choice and it would be fine for you to just sew tow ends of the adjustable band to the wig.

Here are three simple ways for you to choose to wear your wig without glue or any adhesive materials. Actually another method is to sew the wig to your own natural hair. For this method, you’re gonna wear this wig for a few days as it’s not convenient for you to take it off easily. And compared with the other three ways, it seems a little difficult for you to handle, especially for new beginners. No matter which method you choose, these are good options to help you wear lace wigs without glue and protect your edges.
